Democracy Wins!

Prop 50 has passed thanks to every single person who walked, knocked, called, texted, wrote, and voted against Trump’s election-rigging scheme. Thank you, California!

It was also a great night for Democracy and Democrats in Virginia, New Jersey, New York City and Pennsylvania! Congratulations to all the winners!

Donate to the Food Bank

The Republican Administration is refusing to release the 5 billion dollars in contingency funds that are available to fund SNAP. These funds have been set aside EXACTLY for such a situation. The Department of Agriculture even published a memo a few weeks ago saying it would use these funds to ensure benefit payments went out if the shutdown persisted. Then they removed that language from their website when Republicans decided they wanted to weaponize this situation.

Now we must step up if we can and make a donation to the Food Bank or one of the other organizations listed below that are helping sustain our community.

Community Food & Nutrition Resources

The ongoing government shutdown is bringing uncertainty regarding access to essential services for community members, particularly with the pause in CalFresh/SNAP benefits as of November 1. Here are some resources.

Food Bank of Monterey County – Emergency Food Assistance & Distribution Schedule
All-In Monterey – Wednesdays from 4:30pm until food supplies run out, at Seaside High School (enter from Noche Buena and follow the signs). Fresh food such as fruits and vegetables, also canned goods, protein and more!
Seaside Certified Farmers’ Market – 1259 Canyon Del Rey Blvd, Seaside | Thursdays, 3–7 p.m. Accepts EBT, WIC, and Senior FMNP benefits.
Alisal Produce Box Distribution – 632 E Alisal St, Salinas | Tuesdays, 1–2 p.m. (Oct. 28, 2025 – May 26, 2026).
Free Farms Together Produce Boxes – Available now through 2026! Eligible low-income residents can pick up a free weekly box (valued at $26 in fresh produce) at the Seaside Farmers’ Market Info Booth. Bring proof of eligibility, such as an EBT or Medi-Cal card.
Salvation Army Monterey Peninsula Corps – Shabu Shake Good Samaritan Center, Food and Meal Services; provides hot meals and produce boxes.
Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Monterey – Nutrition and Food Support Programs.
Shoreline Church Food Pantry – Weekly Food Pantry Information.
Everyone’s Harvest – Market Bucks Program and nutrition support for Medi-Cal eligible individuals.
Al and Friends– A meal is served on Sunday mornings from 8:30 a.m. to around 9:30 a.m., rain or shine, at Window on the Bay Park, located along the bike path (across from McDonald’s) at 717 Del Monte Ave, Monterey, CA 93940.
Big Sur Share: Every Monday, 12-2, The Big Share collects and distributes fresh food at the Grange to more than 200 Big Sur residents and workers.
Meals on Wheels- Monterey Peninsula– Meal delivery to seniors and lunch served Mon-Friday, 11-1:00 PM
Meals on Wheels- Salinas– Meals Delivered to Seniors

While the CalFresh/SNAP benefits pause is scheduled to begin on November 1, it is important to note that CalWORKs and MediCal benefits and resources are not impacted by the federal shutdown at this time. The courts have ordered the administration to release the 5 billion dollars in SNAP contingency funds. Let us hope they do the right thing, at last!
